There it is again in the Republican Town Committee’s ad in the new Advisor: “the constant negativity, criticism and rhetoric that is permeating our community from our political opposition.”
Is speaking in favor of open, ethical government “negative”?
Is asking town officials to follow laws “negative”?
And what’s wrong with “criticism”? Criticism is what people do in a free, democratic society, and what people can’t do in an authoritarian society.
Criticism is nothing more than analysis. It's not negative, except when people who don't like to have their actions analyzed use it in a negative manner.
And rhetoric? Rhetoric is how one expresses one’s political opinions. It’s certainly how the Republicans express theirs. Why is it bad when Democrats and Independents do it?
Nothing is more negative than attacking people for their “negativity.” What it means is that the Republican Town Committee wants us to be silent, to not express our views, to not criticize them. If you don’t want to be criticized, get out of politics.
"Negativity" is the sound a machine makes when it's low on oil, and the metal's losing its mettle.

Good points Rob. We hear the same rhetoric at the national level, where we're told that any criticism of the president is un-American. Criticism is essential for democracy. It is only reviled in totalitarian societies and among our local republicrooks. I'm not feeling negative. To the contrary, I'm feeling quite positive about removing the scum that has slimed its way into our town.
WELCOME TO NORTH HAVEN, WHERE WE SQUANDER TAXPAYER MONEY MORE RESPONSIBLY THAN THE OTHER GUY !!
Maybe put that sign right on the green. Whataya think??
WELCOME TO NORTH HAVEN WHERE OUR CROOKS ARE ONLY ALLEGEDLY SMARTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE
If criticism is essential for democracy, which I agree with, why are the democratic candidates crying that they are being attacked? The critics of Ms. McCarty are out there in full force now and she does not seem to be able to handle it. That piece that they put out regarding being attacked was ridiculous. Every independent that I have spoken to is turned off by her. Call it what you want, but the reality is that the majority of the swing vote does not accept her.
That, to me, is the true indicator, not what is going on from a partisan standpoint as the Republicans line up on Kopetz side and the Democrats line up on the McCarty side.
Outright denial and righteous indignation are effective political tactics if you're on the defensive, a sort of passive-aggresive argument winner that draws attention away from the reasons you're in serious trouble, be that incompetence, corruption, or whatever. But as long as the opponent or their proxies are able to keep bringing up the problem issue, whatever it may be, it isn't a good long-term strategy.
If I were advising the candidate with the problem issue, I would have someone create some sort of last-minute scandal Hail Mary pass, and I'm curious to see if that's what someone in the GOP will do for Kopetz. If they are, they'd better hurry up because driving around town, things are not looking good.
Whew!
Gosh, I am glad that we have an anonymous (apparently repub) polltaker that is giving us the pulse of all the independent voters in town!
Couching his/her negativity in swirls and clouds of supposed majority opinions is a pathetic version of political spin.
It appears to me that they are in fear of losing their very meaty lifelong perks and they are lashing out with desperate tactics.
If the Republicans win this election, I hope that everyone realizes that is it not an endorsement or turning a blind eye towards the 3 people that have hurt this town's image or the problems that this town has had. It will be because the democrats have a poor choice for their candidate.
That is what this will be about, their candidate will have failed for the 4th time. The democrats then will have to come to the painful realization that they need to come up with a better option for the future.
This election is symbolic on many different levels.
NOT an endorsement of criminality if the Republicrooks win???
That's exactly what a Kopetz win would be. And NO WAY is it just 3 misunderstood inside crooks it is all the others that have enabled and covered up the dirty business over many years!
Hopefully we will see a majority of voters that prefer honest leaders and not the status quo of shady dealings.
Assume nothing. Tell your neighbors to get out and vote Nov. 6. Some may think because of the plethora of lawn signs there will be a big turn-out and they don't need to go vote. I seem to remember turn-outs at elections and referendums that were 11% and 22%--ridiculously low numbers, and some close calls.
Also, don't forget after the last election Mr. Kopetz took his win as a "mandate" on the reval-even though his winning margin was not anywhere near overwhelming. Don't complain about Town Hall if you don't go vote!
Go out and vote next Tuesday.
